Just a check-in, if you’re curious…

I see the traffic for this site, so I know that only about 30-50 of the 150-175 visitors per day look at anything other than the reference content I have out for some of my videos.

Largely, this website was meant to act as a journal of my content creation journey. People have a tendency to forget what all of their waypoints were actually like, and I’m no exception. As I look back, at almost two years worth of talking into the void, it is weird to read some of what I wrote.

Adults don’t typically try to do things that their skills are not well suited for. But I do pottery now - not that I’m great at it.

I knew I wasn’t going to be initially good at content creation.

I don’t know that I’m particularly good at it now.

Still, I know I’m making progress.

Unfortunately, I don’t really know how viable this actually is. I mean, I’ve been able to get a decent subscriber base, but I haven’t been able to turn that into consistent video performance. That’s largely my own fault, as I stubbornly refuse to settle on a single niche. I’m not sure what to do about that, though.

I can understand why people settle into making tons of privacy videos, but that doesn’t change the fact that most of them are garbage. I mean, there’s only so much baseline content you can put out on established topics, without most of it just being a cash grab. Louis Rossman is kind of an outlier because he has the timeliness of current events in his videos - but that’s not most people.

As I take a look at where I am, my main constraint is time. I have a million ideas, and I accumulate more of them at a rate that outstrips my capacity to make the actual content. I don’t make enough money to actually hire any help. I could do more, but I have a full-time job and a family. Most of those are good problems to have, so I’m not complaining.

I’m getting more brand deals, but I’m mostly taking them on barter. Part of it is so I can land equipment that aligns with my channel, and some of it is to make sure I don’t lose editorial control of my content. Either way, it doesn’t pay the bills. It also puts me further behind on my content projects.

If someone wants to help out… art, editing, or anything, really - I’d welcome it. If someone just wants to give me a massive infusion of cash, just to see what happens, that would be great, too.

Unfortunately, I’m not really in a position where I can realistically think about this being a full-time thing. Because of the kind of person I am, I’d normally not even allow myself to type that last line. But hey, my wife has rubbed off on me, and I’ll just put it out there: I’d like to do this full-time.

Hopefully, in time, I will look back at this post, having forgotten that I called my shot.
