Why YouTubers endorse products…

I average about one of these a day… every day

When I put out videos like Dad Ruins Popular VPN Services I get accused of all kinds of things. One common one is that I exaggerate the profit motive of other creators, when they’re endorsing products on their ad reads.

To that, I just say - please see exhibit A, above.

Think of the economics of it for a moment. The $40/$70 has to do with a viewer selecting the longest subscription term - common order terms will be lower than that… so let’s use an average of $10/17.50. A video with 200k views, and a .5% take rate would be $10,000-17,500. That’s a lot of money. Large creators can get 10x of those views.

It’s fair to say that, once a viewer has purchased a subscription, that decreases the take rate for subsequent videos… but that’s also why an advertiser discontinues their endorsement deal once the signups stop.

I haven’t accepted any endorsement deals. It’s not that I don’t need the money… it’s that I haven’t been offered one yet for anything that I’d recommend to my friends or family. If/when that time comes, you’ll probably hear me reading a 60-90 second spot.

If you didn’t know it before, now you know that my integrity isn’t for sale.

Integrity doesn’t pay the bills, though - so if you want to support me, feel free to:
