Newtubers on Reddit…
Reddit, for whatever reason, has about a half dozen sub-reddits for aspiring YouTubers. I joined at the beginning of the year, hoping that I’d learn something.
What did I learn? Most of the people that get on, and stay on, those groups know very little. They don’t understand what YouTube is (like, that it’s an advertising platform). They don’t understand how it works. They don’t understand what the analytics mean. They understand so little, in fact, that they don’t know where their boat is, or what direction it’s pointed in… yet they’re talking about just picking a direction and speed.
It’s kind of shocking.
It also explains the video content that’s created to cater to this audience. Some of it is true, but much of it is not. Instead, it fits into the category of naive reasoning that children exhibit. Explain a problem that someone has, explain an intuitive solution to the problem that has the hallmark of being simple to comprehend - and to do. Nevermind that it’s complete horseshit.
Then they collect the money.
I’ve been trying to explain the more convoluted realities to people that would rather believe that complex problems have simple solutions. And I get it… who wants to know that their problems may be beyond their will, capabilities, or both? I do, because I don’t want to waste my time - but, apparently, others see it as dream killing.
